Morning fire destroys Lodi church – CBS Sacramento

LODI (CBS13) – Tragedy struck a church in Lodi on Easter Sunday as a fire broke out early in the morning, destroying the building.

Heavy smoke and fire consumed and was seen from outside the El Shaddai Church of God and Christ, which is located in a shopping center along Cherokee Lane. The Lodi Fire Department said the flames “ate the building” shortly after 5 a.m. The entire roof of the building collapsed and fell to the ground.

Persistent hot spots continued to appear in the evening. The pastor of the church said the congregation moved into this space less than two months ago. They had renovated the interior of the building and were planning an Easter egg hunt and Sunday afternoon service.

Firefighters say it’s a miracle they managed to save the other half of the mall. Most of the businesses in the space were closed on Sunday, with the exception of the Wild Chinese Buffet. Owner Jason Kwong said it’s a blessing he’s still in business.

“This morning when I walked in, a lot of fire trucks were here in the parking lot,” Kwong said.

Investigators say it will be some time before the cause of this fire is discovered. The damage made it difficult for investigators to access the interior of the building.
