St. Pete Police Investigate Fatal Easter Sunday Shooting

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – St. Petersburg police are investigating an Easter Sunday night shooting that killed one woman and injured two others.

The shooting happened near the Wildwood Park area around 10:50 p.m. Sunday night. St. Pete police said a large group was gathered near the park when gunfire rang out.

Emily Grot, a 35-year-old mother of two, was killed. A man and a teenager were also injured. It comes just days after town leaders pleaded with the community following the death of another young mother, K’Mia Simmons.

“Now we have 13 who have lost their lives due to gun violence in the city of St. Petersburg and in the last year we have had 15,” said Yolanda Fernandez, head of the St. Pete Police Department public information.

Investigators are now trying to figure out what led to the shooting.

“Three completely separate people and again, it just wasn’t a random shot, we believe the shot was targeted, but it clearly wasn’t them,” Fernandez added.

Fernandez tells 8 On Your Side that there will be an increased police presence in areas where recent shootings have taken place, and Chief Anthony Holloway is meeting with different community groups to see how they can help address this issue in the city.
