Yelena’s Hawkeye coat had two neat Black Widow Easter eggs

In Hawkeye, Yelena Belova’s wardrobe contains Black Widow Easter eggs hidden thanks to the show’s costume designer, Michael Crow.

The coat that Yelena Belova wore in Hawk Eye has two Black Widow Easter eggs. A standout star in the series and film, Yelena has quickly left an impression since her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Black Widow’s adopted sister Natasha Romanoff, Yelena, played by Florence Pugh, is already emerging as a major player in the MCU.

Yelena became somewhat of a fan favorite after Pugh starred in Black Widow and Hawk Eye it proves that the character is as charming as he is ruthless. One Hawk Eye The scene in particular, in which Yelena and Kate Bishop try to fix the problem on a pot of mac and cheese, is a perfect example of Pugh balancing the character’s quirkiness with his deadly determination. But the scene also contained a few secrets that only eagle-eyed viewers would spot and they both recall Yelena’s first appearance in the MCU in Black Widow.

Talk to Initiated, Hawk Eye Costume designer Michael Crow has revealed that the coat Yelena wears in the show’s pivotal mac and cheese scene actually hides a few Easter eggs reminiscent of the Black Widow solo movie. The coat, which Crow said was one of the last of its kind in the world, was adorned with a few enamel pins. One of the pins depicted a spider, an intentional nod to the Black Widow coat. Another pin, a disembodied hand in a “pistol” pose has two meanings. Raven explained:

One of them is sort of a finger gun, which was the name of a production company for Hawkeye. It’s also something Florence really liked because it’s something Yelena does in Black Widow a few times. She thought it was a cool reference to Yelena and I thought it was a fun nod to our production company.

The scene between Yelena and Kate is arguably one of the most tense in the series, so it’s no surprise that many viewers didn’t catch the extremely subtle nods on the first viewing. Still, the fact that they were included is indicative of the attention to detail the creative team put into. Hawk Eye and the greatest MCU as a whole. From Pym Tech’s arrows to Kingpin’s iconic comic book outfit, the series is chock-full of callbacks to previous stories, characters, and events. It makes sense that Crow approaches their costume design with the same mindset. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Yelena’s wardrobe has played a bit of its own role in the MCU. In her solo film, it was revealed that the now iconic Black Widow vest was given to her by Yelena.

With Scarlett Johansson’s character dead in the current MCU continuity, there’s a Black Widow-sized hole to fill, and it looks like Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova will be the one to fill it. After being in the spotlight and shining in both Black Widow and Hawk Eye, it seems unlikely that the audience saw Yelena’s last. Even his clothes are already helping to tell the story of the MCU.
